On 20th February, the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, a new chapter in the History of the Uganda Orthodox Church began with the Enthronement of Metropolitan Jeronymos Muzeeyi as third (3rd) Archbishop of Holy Metropolis of Kampala at St. Nicholas Cathedral Namungoona.
The Enthronement was presided over and conducted by Elder Archbishop Makarios of Nairobi who represented the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa His Beatitude Theodoros II. Other Hierarchies including; Metropolitan Innocentios Byakatonda of Burundi and Rwanda, Bishop Silvester Kisitu of Jinja and Eastern Uganda, and Bishop Nectarios Kabuye of Gulu and Northern Uganda were present to grace and witness this historic event.
The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda Hon. Jessica Alupo Epel was the chief guest representing the President of Uganda His Excellency Yoweri Museveni. She presented the congratulatory message from the President in which he wished His Eminence a successful reign as Metropolitan of Kampala and pledged full support to the Church in fostering development for our Motherland Uganda. The Vice President also presented to His Eminence a Brand-New Toyota Land cruiser V8 as a gift from the President to the Archbishop, which he gladly received and thanked the President for his generosity, assistance, and support to our Orthodox Mission work.
Archbishop Makarios delivered a congratulatory message to the new Metropolitan from the Patriarch of Alexandria and also delivered his own message as the presiding Caretaker of the Metropolis ever since the repose of Metropolitan Jonah on 5th September 2021 until this day of the Enthronement.
In his speech, Metropolitan Jeronymos pondered, “What can I give back to God for the blessings he’s poured out on me?” this was a clear expression of how God has been the center of his rise to this current responsibility. He commended the fundamental work of the pioneers of the Orthodox Faith in Uganda whom, he stressed, cemented a firm foundation upon which our faith is flourishing. He also reorganized the efforts of his immediate predecessors; Metropolitan Theodoros Nankyama and Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga and pledged to follow the same line of their vision for the Church to continue with the mission in love, unity, and development together with the entire Church body.
In a special way, he thanked each and every single individual who played a considerable role in his rise to this current position of Metropolitan of Kampala and the entire organization of the enthronement ceremony that yielded such a success. The Metropolitan also committed to working with the Government of Uganda, in all ways possible, for the unity, peace, and prosperity of all.
The Enthronement was graced by hundreds of thousands of people from different walks of life including top government officials, The Katikiro (Premier) of Buganda Kingdom, The Katuukiro (Premier) of Busoga Kingdom, Top Leaders of the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Muslim Community, and other religious denomination. Faithfuls from the different orthodox Centres in Uganda were also present and cheered with joy upon receipt of their new Spiritual Father and Metropolitan of Kampala.
